Songwriter and vocalist Molly Sterling on the soundtrack to her life

What was the first album/single that you bought?

My dad gave me 20 quid and I bought Ashley Tisdale’s first album from Tesco. Absolute rip off.

The last song you listened to?

Doomsday by Architects

Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?

Not really. It’s just a career path that I’ve always naturally known that I’d take.

Is there a song that instantly reminds you of a particular person?

I’m sure there’s been tons but my memory is about as good as a squished marshmallow so I can’t really remember.

Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?

Anything by Keaton Henson, Ben Howard, Florence Welch or PJ Harvey resonates with me to be honest. Particularly a Keaton Henson tune called ‘The Pugilist’ where he talks about the crossover of being an artist and maintaining your mental health. His lyrics are so specific and honest and cut throat. He’s probably my favourite.

Is there a song that you always listen to whilst travelling in the car or on the bus/train ?

My taste in music varies so much it normally just depends on my mood. There isn’t really a specific song that comes to mind.

The band/musician that you grew up listening to?

Pretty much all the music my dad and brother were listening to. Meatloaf, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and then Nickelback, Linkin Park and Alien Ant Farm.

What song do you wish that you had written and why?  I wish I had written ‘Sheela-Na-Gig’ by PJ Harvey cos it’s a badass tune.

What song transports you back in time and why?

Cloud’s Prayer in church. I loved church.

Which song makes you happy when you hear it?

Shake That by Dansson. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been while hungover.

Do you have a favourite song that was featured in a film or tv show?

Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation. Twilight all the waaaaay.

What was the first gig you went to?

Nicki Minaj. Lol again.

What was the first song that you ever performed?

Alicia Keys ‘Fallin’. With a top hat and a cane.
