Indie/electro musician/producer My Tribe Your Tribe on the soundtrack to his life
What was the first album/single that you ever bought?
No Doubt – ‘Tragic Kingdom’.
What is your earliest musical memory?
I remember seeing a drum kit in my older cousin’s attic when I was about 7 or 8. It looked majestic. The cymbals shone in the light. But I didn’t even touch the kit. He didn’t even play it. Just the sight of the instrument was impressive enough.
Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?
I became totally obsessed with Red Hot Chilli Peppers from 12 onwards.I couldn’t sleep all night waiting for my ‘By The Way’ album to arrive in the post and the moment I put that album in my CD player my life changed forever.
Is there a song/band that you love that was introduced to you by someone else?
A guy a year above my in school introduced me to Cathy-Davey’s first album – Something Ilk, one of the coolest debut releases by an Irish artist.
Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?
Whitest Boy Alive – ‘Don’t Give Up’. It’s a perfect companion song for those with social anxiety which has been one of my biggest obstacles to overcome for most of my twenties.
The band/musician that you grew up listening to?
My dad gave me Beatles albums every Christmas. It’s probably the best thing you could ever do If you want your kid to learn how to write songs. They explored and perfected songwriting through so many genres.
What song do you wish that you had written and why?
Wilco – Jesus Etc. – It’s such a simple song but there’s so much emotion packed in there. Jeff Tweedy’s lyrics feel instantly relatable but he has this way of slipping from real-world scenes into spiritual concepts so swiftly but naturally.
What song transports you back in time and why?
Gregory Alan Isakov – Amsterdam – I had just gotten my first job and apartment in Dublin in October and the song has this real foggy-golden-autumnal atmosphere to it. It instantly sparks up memories of a relationship I had at the time.
Which song makes you dance when you hear it?
Caribou – Odessa. It’s such a lively and uniquely produced track. I haven’t heard a dance album ever come close to resembling what ‘Swim’’ sounds like sonically.
Which song makes you sad when you hear it?
Cass McCombs – You Saved My Life . The pedal steel lines get me right in the stomach every time.
What was the first gig you went to?
The Revs in a hotel in Carlow. The played their absolute hearts out for about 2 hours to a bunch of 30 kids. It was so inspiring.
What was the first song that you ever performed?
An original called Sicilian Insider. I formed a band with my teenage friends and it was the opening song of our first gig. We played to a full room and we felt like gods. I was about 14. The bar was really cool to let us play at that age. Young musicians don’t get that kind of chance these days.
