Alternative pop artist ARTGIRL on the soundtrack to her life
What was the first album/single that you ever bought?
It’s hard to be sure. It might have been a Boyzone or S Club 7 single.
I do have a very distinct memory of buying Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ when I was very young. I was so excited!
What is your earliest musical memory?
Listening to ‘Lemon Tree’ by Fools Garden in the back of the car, tucked into my car seat.
My Dad turning around to us kids from the drivers seat, with everyone belting out the tune. Still a good track!
Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?
Whitney Houston was always a hero of mine. I always wanted to sing like her when I was young.
What song instantly reminds you of a particular person?
Bloodhound Gang ‘The Bad Touch’ always reminds me of my best friend Rachel. We grew up together and we thought we were being so badass going around singing and laughing these lyrics to each other. “You and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals so lets do it like they do on the discovery channel”, so funny!
Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?
There’s about a million! It’s the reason I write music, the reason I’m a musician.
One off the top of my head is Linkin Park ‘Numb’.
“I’m tired of being what you want me to be…..Every step that I take is another mistake to you”.
Growing up I’ve always felt a lot of pressure to achieve and succeed in this world.
Most of which I placed upon myself but also I believe society and everything around us is constantly telling us to be better, be faster, be smarter, work harder.
You are always chasing the next rung on the ladder, never reaching satisfaction. It’s that rat race feeling. It is absolute rubbish and causes so much illness and hurt in the world. This song empathises with those feelings and makes you feel less isolated. It is so powerful!
The band/musician that you grew up listening to?
What song do you wish that you had written and why?
That is tough! ‘Orinoco Flow’ by Enya. I love escape songs, it would be a joy to write and perform it with a full orchestra.
The arrangement and sonic depth is sick! Of course it’s astronomical success would be like winning the lotto. I’d literally “sail away and beach beyond the Yellow Sea”. Everything about that song is perfect!
What song transports you back in time and why?
‘Reach’ S Club 7 takes me back to school days. I remember being in the hall where we’d climb up on the wooden benches so we could all jump off at the same time when it got to the chorus, “reach for the stars”. That was at the first disco I ever went to, yes back when it was called a disco.
Which song makes you happy when you hear it?
So many to choose from. If I have to choose one, ‘This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)’ Natalie Cole. Close contenders are ‘Walking On Sunshine’ Katrina & The Waves, ‘Uptown Girl’ Billy Joel, ‘Little Bitty Pretty One’ The Jackson 5.
Which song makes you sad when you hear it?
‘Dying In The Sun’ The Cranberries will definitely make me cry. Even more so now since Dolores tragic death. ‘Hello’ Evanescence same thing. I think it’s important to have these songs. Suppressing emotions causes lots of problems. Let it out and then you can move forward.
What was the first gig you went to?
Destiny’s Child in ‘The Point’ as it was then called. I remember they were delayed for some reason getting there.
When they finally came on stage I nearly died of happiness!
What was the first song that you ever performed?
I performed Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the violin when I was about 8 or 9 at the schools Christmas show. That was the first time being on a big stage with an even bigger audience. I barely remember it. I couldn’t tell you the first song I sung on stage. I did perform Aladdin’s ‘A Whole New World’ as Jasmine in our primary school play. I was 11/12. I hate hearing that song now it makes me cringe soooo much!
