The last song you listened to?

Wake Up This Day – Tom Misch

What is your earliest musical memory?

My mother singing me to sleep. She used to sing a song about a yellow bird who lived in a banana tree. My mum has a really sweet voice.

Do you have a favourite song that was featured in a film or tv show?

Ninja Turtles theme song? (kidding – sort of). Would it be really cheesy if I said Irene Cara ‘Flashdance…what a feeling’?

Is there a song that instantly reminds you of a particular person?

Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd is my Dad’s song.

Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?

‘Breathe’ – Pink Floyd. ‘For long you live and high you fly, And smiles you’ll give and tears you’ll cry, And all you touch and all you see, Is all your life will ever be…’ – there are lots…but that one sticks with me wherever I go.

The band/musician that you grew up listening to?

Alicia Keys

What song do you wish that you had written and why?

Ain’t Nobody – Chaka Khan. That song has eveything. It’s groovy, hooky, full of amazing tones and textures, it’s deep, it’s vibey and well the vocal line….another level.

What song transports you back in time and why?

Tupac’s version of Changes. That song takes me back to when I was at school. Myself and my closest friend knew every lyric and used to rap it into hairbrushes at sleepovers. Haha. True story.

Which song makes you sad when you hear it?

Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work. I genuinely cry everytime I hear that song. I went to see a class Kate Bush tribute group in The Button Factory a few months ago called Cloudbusting and sure enough burst to tears and sobbed uncontrollably in my brother’s arms desperately trying to do it quietly! It was a real ‘you could hear a pin drop’ moment and…well you can imagine. Absolutely beautiful song and it was a perfect performance. It’s a song about regret I think ultimately, and there’s a selfishness in us as artists you know? We’re selfish and we live often very consciously of this…we kind of have to be in order to do what we do, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt us. At least in my case it hurts me. I feel it…and there are some lines in that song that kind of tell me my own future I think, or maybe that’s just my interpretation of it. Anyways check it out, it’s a class song.

Which song makes you happy when you hear it?

Most Chic songs!

What was the first gig you went to?

Interestingly enough my Da took me to see The Australian Pink Floyd at The Ambassador theatre when I was very young. Hmmm perhaps some of the above song choices making more sense now… 🙂

What was the first song that you ever performed?

That’s a tricky one…I used to write songs with my pal I mentioned who used to rap Tupac songs into hairbrushes with…I’m pretty sure we played them for close friends and family. I think I learned The House of the Rising Sun pretty quick when I started playing guitar and remember singing that a lot for family members.

What was the first album/single that you bought?

It was either The Verve ‘Urban Hymns’ or The Cardigans ‘Gran Turismo’. I am not 100% sure.

Is there a song that you always listen to whilst travelling in the car or on the bus/train ?

I love Bat for Lashes ‘All Your Gold’…

Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?

No one in particular to be honest. I think I just always felt it inside.
