Singer/songwriter Laura Duff on the soundtrack to her life

What was the first album/single that you ever bought?

It was an Atomic Kitten single as far as I can remember! The shame!

What is your earliest musical memory?

I have two really clear musical memories as a child. I remember sitting on the kitchen counter playing the Debussy CD that my parents had. I don’t know why that has stuck with me but I always go back to it. I also remember being obsessed with the Johnny Cash DVD that my Dad had, I was glued to the TV whenever I could manage to put it on.

Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?

I was very inspired by my music teachers growing up, so that definitely played a part in my wanting to me a musician and performer, but if I had to pick one artist it would have to be Ben Howard.

What song instantly reminds you of a particular person?

Anything from Mumford & Sons’ first album reminds me of my Dad, he loved them.

Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?

There’s so many! I love Lucy Rose’s lyrics- she’s so honest and bare in her writing. Leif Vollebeck is a recent discovery for me, his work is incredible.

The band/musician that you grew up listening to?

Again there was loads, I was Coronas obsessed growing up. Same with Kings of Leon and The Frames. Before I could find my own music to listen to though my parents played everything from Sade to Luke Kelly. I still love them all.

What song do you wish that you had written and why?

Anything by Matt Corby, I’m completely in awe of his work.

What song transports you back in time and why?

This is very specific but Let Me In by Grouplove brings me back to the mornings of getting the bus to school with my sister. We shared my iPod each morning and that one really sticks out for us!

Which song makes you happy when you hear it?

I would have to say anything by Bombay Bicycle Club, I adore them- such feel good songs!

Which song makes you sad when you hear it?

Body by Julia Jacklin.

What was the first gig you went to?

I went to see Six with my parents in UL Concert Hall when I was 10. They need to be commended for that!

What was the first song that you ever performed?

I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker by Sandi Thom.
