Music producer / singer Caz9 on the soundtrack to her life

The last song you listened to?

The new single from FKA Twigs – Cellophane.

What is your earliest musical memory?

The music class I had in primary school with an amazing old Italian Lady – she let us make so much noise banging percussion instruments and clapping – best way to spend school hours ever!

Do you have a favourite song that was featured in a film or tv show?

I’ve been reliving Baz Lurhman’s Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, it was one of my absolute favourites. Every song on there is a total banger, across all genres. But I love the cover of Young Hearts Run Free by Kym Mazelle, it’s really dancey and uplifting.

Is there a song that instantly reminds you of a particular person?

Most hiphop from the 00’s reminds me of my girl crew from school, especially 2001 by Dre. That was on repeat for a whole year!

Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?

Two of us on The Run by Lucius is a really beautiful love song that I’ve just discovered (it was released in 2013). It’s about trying to move forward in your life with your partner, make something of yourselves and how hard that can be especially if it means leaving behind people or places that can’t or won’t come with you on that journey of self-discovery and growing up. It really resonates with me right now – myself and my other half are both creatives and it can be a real struggle focussing on ourselves and trying to stay positive about making our careers work for our future.

The band/musician that you grew up listening to?

Ahhh there’s so many!!! My first love was the Spice Girls, then Joni Mitchell, then Jewel. When I was a teenager I started branching out into rock and was obsessed with Live and Incubus for years. Still am haha.

What song do you wish that you had written and why?

Anything of Robyn’s Konichiwa Bitches Album. I was working in Virgin when it came out selling CD’s and I remember someone put it on and I was like who the hell is this chick?! The genre bending blew my mind. My favourite track is the collab with Klearup – With Every Heartbeat.

What song transports you back in time and why?

The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I was in boarding school and myself and my girlfriends were all really close because we lived with each other! I remember my friend Emilie was always coming back after the holidays with minidiscs full of music and this band became one of our favourites. It was a real time of music discovery – this song always brings me back there.

Which song makes you sad when you hear it?

Jose Gonzalez cover of Heartbeats by The Knife. Something about it make me feel so sad and I don’t know why. It’s so incredibly beautiful.

Which song makes you happy when you hear it?

My go to happy song is Four Days by Counting Crows – it’s on This Desert Life and if I need to cheer up quick smart I put that on and dance around. It’s really uplifting!

What was the first gig you went to?

Jewel at the Olympia I think I was 12. I met her back stage and she signed my copy of her book of poetry. I remember I had a really awkward haircut and was wearing a long skirt!

What was the first song that you ever performed?

The first song I ever performed where I was singing on my own was You’re So Vain by Carly Simon. It was part of a school singing competition and they gave me the high ad lib part as a solo in a choir group. I chickened out singing the big high note on the night but my dad always says it was the first time he realised I should be focussing on music. I think I was about 11.

What was the first album/single that you bought?

The first one I bought or begged my mum to buy was Blackstreet – Another Level. Still one of my all time favourites.

Is there a song that you always listen to whilst travelling in the car or on the bus/train?

When I’m travelling I love to use that time to listen to new music, especially albums or EP’s. We consume music so differently now to when I was growing up and I find a long journey is the ideal time to settle in to a body of work and listen from start to finish. I most recently did this with Ventura by Anderson .Paak – great album.

Is there a particular song/band/singer that influenced you to be a musician?

All of the musicians!!! haha I wanted to be a singer and songwriter since I was about 11 – so many different artists have inspired me in so many different ways. But I will say that when Lady Gaga came out I’d never seen someone like her – a singer who danced, wrote their own music, played their own instruments, but made pop music and owned it. Similar to Robyn, they both made me realise I could embrace the pop tart inside me and be proud of that.
