93 Acres on the soundtrack to his life

What was the first album/single that you ever bought?

The first album I bought with my own money was actually a ‘2 for 1’ style offer in HMV. I remembering buying ‘Demon Days’ by Gorillaz and ‘Monkey Business’ by The Black Eyed Peas. I’m still a big fan of them, however it’s been a while since I’ve taken the cd player out!

Is there a song whose lyrics resonate with you and why so?

‘Swim Good’ by Frank Ocean has always resonated with me. He portrays his dark state of mind in such an eloquent way. It’s truly mesmerising.

Is there a particular song/band/singer that made you want to be a musician?

Matt Bellamy from Muse comes to mind when I think of someone who made me want to be a musician. He had a similar musical background to me. This definitely influenced me as I saw him incorporate multiple styles into his own music. He taught me to experiment with multiple influences while writing pieces.

Is there a song/band that you love that was introduced to you by someone else?

Yes, Mura Masa. I remember my friend Ben, who is in the band ‘All the Luck in the World’, introduced me to the song ‘Love For That’ feat. Shura. I have been a big fan of all Mura Masa’s stuff since then. I have loved everything he has released.

What is your earliest musical memory?

My earliest musical memory is my mother playing an Irish jig on the piano. My siblings and I were jumping and dancing around the room as she played. I think it was called ’The Irish Washerwoman’.

The band/musician that you grew up listening to?

When I was younger I would have listened to what my older sister was playing around the house. Let’s just say I’m very familiar with the work of S Club 7 and Five…

What song do you wish that you had written and why?

I wish I had written ‘Beggin’ by Madcon. It’s a timeless song that has everything from a catchy hook to tasteful and intricate instrumentation. The bass line gets me every time.

What song transports you back in time and why?

I used to listen to Fleet Foxes a lot when I took breaks from studying for the leaving cert. Especially while going for runs. Their music will forever remind me now of the stress they alleviated.

Which song makes you dance when you hear it?

‘Yellow’ by 20syl is a really fun song that always gets me moving! My brother put it on a playlist while we were helping our cousins fix a wall for my aunt, a few years ago. Needless to say it gets a listen every time we meet up.

Which song makes you sad when you hear it?

I find the piece ’On The Nature Of Daylight’ by Max Richter to be very powerful. It’s an instrumental that says so much. Sometimes less is more and this is a great example of that.

What was the first gig you went to?

My extended family used to go to gigs together. Westlife was the first gig we went to, followed closely by P Diddy and Snoop Dogg. That was an interesting one to say the least!

What was the first song that you ever performed?

Thin Lizzy’s, ‘Dancing in the Moonlight’ was the first song I ever performed. It was with a group of friends out of the side of a truck in Rostrevor, Co. Down.
